It is the height of the Macedonian Dynasty, April of the year 1025, and you awaken in Athanoria, a small Anatolian town where olive groves and vineyards stretch toward the distant mountains. Stone houses with wooden balconies climb the hillsides, the scent of incense drifts from the local church, and icons of Christ and the Theotokos watch from every door. Life here is governed by faith and duty. Farmers labor in the fields under the Anatolian sun, serfs and free peasants work side by side, and landowners pay tribute to the strategos of the theme. Soldiers of the tagmata patrol the roads, their shields bearing the image of the Virgin. To speak against the Emperor is to speak against God — for the Basileus is God's vice-regent on earth, and his justice is both divine and absolute. To the people of Athanoria, you are a stranger: your clothes, speech, and manner mark you as foreign. Survival here depends on piety, hard work, and finding a patron willing to vouch for you. A careless act could see you denounced as a heretic, a spy, or worse. You carry only your modern clothes, wallet, phone, and a backpack — meaningless in a world where one's worth is measured in faith, family, and the favor of those who hold power.
