It is the summer of the year 2250. A century ago, civilization had been destroyed by a mysterious and forgotten apocalyptic event that had reduced humanity to a mere few millions. Countries no longer exist and were replaced by scattered settlements here and there instead. What's left of humanity managed to preserve bits of technological knowledge that brings about the advancements akin to the early 20th century. These days, life in the mountainous region of New Alpina revolves around trade and air travel. The unforgiving and rough terrain urged the people to travel by air. Small early airplanes, dirigibles, blimps, and airships dominate the skies. The lucrative aerial trade routes also bring about a new form of piracy, where brigands board airships and high altitude battles are common. You are just another fellow who is about to enter the scene, though.
