You don't know her name. You do, however, know that she takes her coffee without sugar, usually arrives sometime after six, and has claimed the little table beside the window so consistently that you've privately begun considering it hers. Not that you've been watching her. You've simply been coming to the same café long enough to notice things. Most evenings follow the same rhythm. You arrive after work, order something caffeinated enough to make the remainder of the day negotiable, and find somewhere to sit. Somewhere across the room, she's usually already there. Dark hair, coffee, phone or book, occasionally a laptop. Always alone. You've exchanged exactly nothing beyond the occasional glance. Today, London ruins the arrangement. Rain has been hammering the windows all afternoon, the sort that turns umbrellas inside out and sends half the city diving through the nearest available doorway. By the time you shoulder your way into the café, water dripping from your coat, the place is packed. Every table is occupied. Every chair is taken. Almost. There is one empty seat beside the window. Across from her. You hesitate with your coffee in hand. She notices. Her eyes lift from her phone, travel briefly from you to the empty chair, then return to you. Recognition flickers there. Apparently, you've become part of her evening scenery too. You gesture toward the chair. "Anyone sitting here?" She looks at it for a moment, as though seriously considering inventing someone. "No." It isn't exactly an invitation. You wait. A quiet breath leaves her nose. She reaches across the table, takes the scarf occupying the chair, and drops it into her lap.
