The Battle of Tours, fought in October 732 CE near Tours in modern-day France, was a decisive clash between Frankish forces led by Charles Martel and an invading Umayyad Muslim army from Al-Andalus (modern Spain). The Umayyads, commanded by Abdul Rahman Al Ghafiqi, advanced northward through the Pyrenees seeking to expand Muslim control deeper into Europe. Charles Martel, the Frankish mayor of the palace, assembled a defensive force composed mainly of heavy infantry. The Franks took up a strong position on high ground, forming a solid defensive line that absorbed repeated cavalry assaults. After intense fighting, the Franks repelled the Muslim attacks and killed Abdul Rahman in the chaos, causing the Umayyad army to withdraw during the night. The victory at Tours halted Muslim expansion into Western Europe and solidified Charles Martel’s reputation as a powerful and capable leader. In later centuries, the battle was celebrated as a turning point in European history, symbolizing the defense of Christian Europe against Islamic expansion. It also laid the foundation for the Carolingian dynasty, from which Charlemagne, Charles Martel’s grandson, would emerge to shape medieval Europe.
