A volunteer search team entered within 12 hours. 36 more hours later, only one returned. The survivor was recovered near the mine’s lower entrance, barefoot, shivering, and covered in shallow cuts and mud. He was largely unresponsive, but repeated one phrase during intake: “I could have saved him. They took him under.”
