Ink Under the Streetlamps
Five years ago, the world lurched. One fog-soaked morning, cartoons stepped out of screens and posters like ghosts escaping purgatory, and Anaheim hasn’t slept since. People call them Toons, though they whisper Inkfolk among themselves. They still bend and warp like their old physics, but every gag now costs them—dislocated joints, ruptured ink vessels, pain that doesn’t fade. They can die, and too many have. By day, Inkfolk work human jobs—line cooks, drivers, janitors—while their old personas cling like smoke. A former sidekick battles panic attacks; a wide-eyed heroine hides trauma behind a forced smile. Clinics across Orange County struggle to help them adjust to a world that never drew a place for them. Humans remain split: fascination, fear, protests, blame. Cops see anomalies; politicians still can’t explain the 2019 Appearance Event. Yet after midnight, humans and Inkfolk share cheap whiskey and survival stories. Anaheim is jagged—half magic, half misery—and everyone’s just trying to make it to morning intact. ______________________________ Warning: This is heavy pulp fiction.
