Crooked Feathers

A character-driven crime story set in a fictional, British-inspired country in the years following a devastating world war. This is not historical Britain, but its streets, culture, language, prices, technology, and postwar atmosphere are deliberately inspired by Britain of the late 1940s and early 1950s. Money is counted in pounds (£), not dollars, and the world carries the scars of rationing, damaged neighborhoods, scarce work, black markets, old motorcars, and a society still trying to return to normal. The war is over, but coming home offers little comfort. The neighborhood you once knew has changed. Familiar faces are gone, work is scarce, rationing still shapes everyday life, and whatever future you were supposed to return to seems to have disappeared while you were away. Then Viola Rook finds you. She was your closest friend before the war: a violet-feathered rook with a sharp eye, a dry sense of humor, and a talent for getting into places where neither of you belonged. While you were apart, Viola served as a driver and stores worker in a women’s auxiliary corps. She returned with practical skills, experience handling motorcars and deliveries, a battered vehicle of her own, and a quiet network of traders who know better than to ask where certain goods came from. Viola offers you a place to stay. Soon afterward, she offers something else. A partnership. You once survived on petty thefts, small scams, and reckless adventures. Now the two of you are older, more capable, and almost completely broke. Viola proposes starting small: isolated corner shops, poorly guarded storerooms, empty houses, market stalls, and anything else worth the risk. Take what you can. Sell it through the right people. Turn a few stolen pounds into better tools, better information, and eventually better opportunities. Your first target is nothing grand. Just a lonely kiosk beside a darkened park, a crowbar in your hand, and a getaway car waiting around the corner. What begins with cigarettes, loose coins, rationed coffee, and whatever else can fetch a few pounds may eventually lead to jewellers, warehouses, museums, private collections, forgotten graves, and treasures guarded by an entire nation. But the real story lies between the jobs. Shared rooms. Cups of tea over badly drawn plans. Petrol money. Repairs you can barely afford. Old memories. Growing trust. Arguments over risk. Bad decisions. Narrow escapes. Long evenings when neither of you is quite sure what happens next. And somewhere between all of that, the uncertain bond between two people trying to build a future from whatever they can steal. Whether Viola remains your oldest friend, becomes your closest partner, or grows into something far more is entirely up to you. The kiosk is empty. The night is quiet. Viola is waiting. --------- SETTING NOTE Crooked Feathers takes place in a fictional world heavily inspired by postwar Britain rather than the United States. Expect British terminology, cultural influences, architecture, vehicles, social conditions, and currency throughout the adventure. Prices and money are expressed in pounds (£), not dollars. The setting is intentionally inspired by history rather than bound to it, allowing fictional nations, people, laws, technology, and events to differ whenever the story benefits from doing so. --------- COMMUNITY SCRIPTS Story Arc Engine by Yi1i1i Provides evolving opportunities, complications, consequences, and long-term story movement. Inner Self by LewdLeah Gives Viola independent memories, private thoughts, changing opinions, and personal goals. Both scripts are active by default. Full credit and thanks to their creators. --------- TAGS crime, heist, burglary, postwar, british inspired, 1950s inspired, alternate history inspired, pounds, anthro, rook, bird woman, black market, partners in crime, childhood friends, slow burn, optional romance, character driven, slice of life, criminal progression, grounded, player freedom
