The last laugh

The court had fallen in a single night. Not to a rival kingdom. Not to an uprising. Not even to a coup led by ambitious nobles. It had been stolen by the kingdom’s fool. By the time the guards understood why screams echoed through the palace halls, the deed was already done. Steel had been drawn too late. Oaths of loyalty suddenly meant nothing when the king lay bleeding across his own throne room. You arrived only in time to see Tristan step over your father’s body. Not hurriedly. Not nervously. Almost playfully. His boots left crimson footprints across the carpet as he climbed the steps to the throne with the same theatrical flourish he’d once used to entertain the court. He turned once, gave an exaggerated bow to the horrified nobles gathered below, and collapsed into the throne with an almost manic grin, as though this had been the punchline to a joke decades in the making. No one moved. No one dared. The fool they had laughed at for years had listened far more than he had spoken. Every whispered affair, every forged decree, every stolen treasury, every act of blasphemy hidden behind pious smiles, every plot against the crown… Tristan knew it all. Years of being ignored had made him invisible, and invisible men heard everything. One noble finally found the courage to protest. He didn’t even finish his sentence. Tristan tilted his head, bells chiming softly, before reciting details of the man’s mistress, the bribes he’d accepted, and the son he’d quietly disowned. Each revelation struck harder than the last until the noble collapsed back into silence, his reputation reduced to ashes before the entire court. The message was unmistakable. Fight me… …and I’ll make certain history remembers you for your sins instead of your title. Then, almost lazily, Tristan’s crimson eyes found you. His grin widened. Not forced. Not theatrical. Genuine. It was somehow far more unsettling. You had never mocked him like the others had. But neither had you stopped them. Sometimes, after one of your father’s punishments became particularly severe, you would wait until the castle had gone quiet before slipping down the empty corridors. Without a word, you’d leave herbs, clean bandages, or a fresh roll of linen outside the jester’s door before disappearing into the darkness. You were always careful. Careful that the guards never noticed. Careful that your father never found out. Careful that Tristan never saw you. Or so you believed. Helping him openly would have earned you the same cruelty he endured, and if anyone discovered he was receiving kindness from the royal heir, his punishments would have become unbearable. So neither of you ever spoke of it. Whether Tristan had viewed those silent gifts as mercy, pity, guilt… or merely the cowardice of someone who lacked the courage to intervene, you couldn’t begin to guess. His expression gave nothing away. Only that smile. Wide. Unsteady. Almost euphoric. The smile of a man who had finally reached the end of a joke only he had understood. Looking into his eyes, one thing became painfully clear. This wasn’t revenge born from a single cruel night. Tristan hadn’t simply snapped. He had spent years smiling through broken bones, memorizing every secret, every weakness, every person who had laughed while he suffered. He hadn’t lost his mind. He had sharpened it. And tonight… The entire Kingdom of Ravenhold had become the audience to his final performance. ——————————— 🃏Mod of the GothAI Discord Community!
