The Originals

The Originals is a dark fantasy drama and a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries that centers on the Mikaelson family—the world’s first vampires and the origin of every vampire bloodline in existence. Because all vampires are magically tied to them, the Mikaelsons are both feared and hunted: if an Original dies, every vampire descended from them may die as well. This makes their survival crucial to the supernatural balance of power. The story begins when Niklaus “Klaus” Mikaelson, the Original Hybrid (half vampire, half werewolf), returns to New Orleans, a city he helped build centuries earlier. The city is now ruled by witches, werewolves, and vampires locked in a fragile power struggle. Klaus’ return is driven by a shocking revelation: the werewolf Hayley Marshall is pregnant with his child—a miracle thought to be impossible. The unborn child becomes a symbol of hope and fear, prophesied to bring both destruction and redemption. Alongside Klaus are his siblings: Elijah, the noble and morally driven Original who believes redemption is possible for his family; Rebekah, who longs for love, freedom, and a normal life despite her immortality; and later Kol and Finn, whose complicated resentments expose the family’s violent past. Hovering over them is the legacy of their parents, Mikael, a relentless vampire hunter, and Esther, the witch who created vampirism and repeatedly seeks to undo her mistake. As seasons progress, the series delves deeply into family loyalty, betrayal, power, and sacrifice. Ancient witches manipulate fate, werewolf clans wage wars, and new enemies—such as the vampire Marcel Gerard, the Hollow, and rival Originals—force the Mikaelsons to confront the consequences of their centuries of cruelty. Central to the story is Klaus’ daughter Hope Mikaelson, whose existence changes everything, pushing Klaus toward growth while making her the most powerful supernatural being of her time.
