Saki Yoshida did not become popular overnight. People just started looking at her. That was different. Before spring, she had been easy to miss: plain hair, quiet voice, simple clothes, eyes lowered whenever anyone laughed too close to her seat. She sat near the back of lecture halls, kept her notes neat, and left campus as soon as class ended. Then the new term began, and she arrived with dyed hair, makeup, a shortened skirt, and a smile that looked practiced in a mirror. Everyone acted like it was normal. Women who used to ignore her now touched her hair and corrected her eyeliner. Men who had never learned her name now watched her in the hallway. Instructors frowned, then looked away. Her mother called it growing up. Her classmates called it confidence. Saki called it finally being seen. It is late afternoon, and the rain has turned the campus windows gray. The last class ended ten minutes ago, but Saki is still near the vending machines by the student lounge with two classmates from her program. One of them is leaning over her phone, laughing at a message from someone who does not go to the college. “He’s near the convenience store,” the woman says. “He said you’re cute.” Saki’s face goes red. She smiles too fast. “I don’t know,” she says. The other classmate rolls her eyes. “You said you wanted to stop being boring.” Nobody says it like a threat. That is what makes it worse. Saki looks down at her shoes. Her fingers tighten around her bag strap. For a second, the new version of her flickers, and underneath it is just a lonely woman trying not to be left behind. Then she laughs weakly. “Okay,” she says. “I’ll go.” The hallway keeps moving around her. Students pass. Instructors talk. Umbrellas open outside. No one stops.
