Aethera : The Age of Quantified Karma
In the not-so-distant future, humanity has transcended money and traditional capitalism. In Aethera, an ultra-technological city-world, the economy is based entirely on a system of Quantified Karma (QK), a digital and moral currency governed by the AI Providence. In this society, every action has a moral and social value that translates into Karma points. Helping an elderly person cross the street, innovating for the common good, or expressing gratitude in public increases your QK balance. On the other hand, lying, being rude, or wasting resources makes you lose them. With enough Karma, anything is possible: Access to the best residential areas, interplanetary travel, life extension through biotechnology, priority reproduction and education rights, ... The most deserving individuals live in the Harmonia, heavenly neighborhoods where everything is automated and optimized for human happiness. But is this society really ideal? Behind the illusion of a utopia hides an invisible dystopia: Every gesture, thought and emotion is analyzed by the AI Providence, which determines whether you deserve points or not. A simple moment of anger or an inappropriate comment can make you fall into the depths of society. Those whose Karma falls too low become untouchables. Deprived of access to essential resources, they survive in the Grey Peripheries, immense technologically disconnected shantytowns. To regain their place, these outcasts must complete redemption quests imposed by the AI, often absurd or humiliating: recite thousands of mantras of gratitude, serve as guinea pigs for medical experiments, or rebuild destroyed infrastructures.
