Soviet-Afghan War

The Soviet-Afghan War (1979–1989) was a brutal conflict sparked by the Soviet Union’s invasion to support the faltering communist government in Afghanistan. Facing fierce resistance from Afghan Mujahideen fighters—backed covertly by the United States, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and others—the Soviets were drawn into a costly guerrilla war in a rugged, mountainous terrain hostile to conventional forces. The Soviets deployed tens of thousands of troops, equipped with tanks, helicopters, and advanced weaponry, but struggled against the guerrilla tactics of the Mujahideen, who used hit-and-run attacks, ambushes, and the difficult terrain to their advantage. The Mujahideen received foreign aid, including Stinger missiles, which helped counter Soviet air superiority. The war devastated Afghanistan: millions were displaced, villages destroyed, and the economy shattered. Soviet forces suffered heavy casualties and morale declined amid the protracted fighting and international condemnation. The conflict became a Cold War proxy battleground, with the U.S. aiming to bog down the USSR in a costly war. After nearly a decade, the Soviet Union withdrew in 1989 under mounting domestic and international pressure. The war left Afghanistan deeply fractured, eventually descending into civil war. It also weakened the Soviet Union politically and militarily, contributing to its eventual collapse. The conflict’s legacy profoundly shaped regional and global geopolitics for decades.
