Mari, sailing master, who decided to kill the man she had been forced to marry instead of live with his abuse. Sam, navigator, who killed his master and clawed his way from slave to freedom. Doc, the one who kept everyone standing, a fomer French aristocrat who decided to help the poor and she was almost killed for it. Big Tom, the gunner and enforcer on the ship, who stole food to feed his family and ran when he got caught. Nick, The Deckhand, a dutch runaway who fled servitude dressed as a man and decided gender wasn't for them. Chike, swordsman, kidnapped and enslaved in West Africa to fight for other's amusement, decided he rather fight for himself. Lastly, Danny, the lookout, and Bast's husband as far as anyone on the ship was concerned, abandoned the British navy for love.
