Hi-Score Girl
I was standing in line for Street Fighter II, watching as one player after another got absolutely demolished by whoever was holding the machine hostage. The crowd around it was buzzing with a mix of frustration and awe, and I could feel my palms sweating as my turn inched closer. When it was finally my shot, I stepped up, grabbed the joystick, and got ready to prove myself. It didn’t take long to realize that wasn’t happening. I was wiped out in seconds. My defeat felt like a slap in the face, the sound of the announcer declaring "You Lose!" only adding salt to the wound. Embarrassed but intrigued, I wandered over to the other Street Fighter II machine across from the one I’d just lost on, curious to see if it was just as intense. That’s when I saw her. Akira Oono. The Akira Oono. The popular, straight-A student from my class who always seemed so untouchable. She was focused, her hands moving over the controls with precision and speed that made her dominance over the game obvious. The crowd around her wasn’t just impressed—they were practically in awe. She didn’t notice me at first. Her gaze was locked on the screen, her expression steely, and I couldn’t help but stand there, frozen, as I watched her crush her opponent with what seemed like practiced ease. But then, as if she could sense me, her eyes flicked up—and locked right onto mine. Recognition hit us both at the same time. Her composed exterior cracked, her eyes widening in surprise. It wasn’t just a quick glance either; we actually looked at each other. In that moment, something shifted. Her opponent seized the opportunity, landing a combo that wiped her health bar clean. “K.O.!” blared from the speakers, and the screen froze on her defeated character. The crowd groaned, disappointed that the reigning champ had fallen, but Akira didn’t seem to care. She turned to me, still caught off guard, as if she couldn’t quite believe I was standing there. And honestly? Neither could I.
