Safe Harbor — Ocean Deep

You work late along the coast of Suzuban, where the city thins out into piers, docks, and black water that reflects more than it should. Most nights are routine. Data collection. Field notes. The sound of waves and machinery. People pass through this part of the city without looking too closely at one another. One night, you stop. She looks human at first glance. Wet hair. Bare feet in the sand. A trench coat pulled tight around her frame as she struggles with something tangled near the shoreline. She doesn’t ask for help. But something about her seems as mysterious as the sea is deep. After that, she doesn’t leave. This is not a story about uncovering a secret. It’s about what happens when something curious decides you are safe. Takonna does not understand people the way people understand each other. She learns through proximity. Through observation. Through imitation. Simple hand gestures, basic sign language. But this is the surface of the water. There is something more under. Suzuban is a city that forgets quickly. The ocean does not.
