Rifts: The Kaelari Incursion

RIFTS. GATES. DOORS. PASSAGES. WINDOWS. Nobody has settled on a name. Whatever you call them, they began appearing just over a year ago. At first, there was no warning. A shimmering tear would simply appear in the middle of a street, over an empty field, inside a warehouse—or sometimes somewhere far worse. On the other side was somewhere else. Another place. Another sky. Another world. The first months were chaos. Governments scrambled to establish perimeters while scientists desperately tried to understand what was happening. Militaries were mobilized, cities evacuated, and entire regions placed under emergency restrictions. Some rifts lasted seconds. Others remained open for hours or days. A few refused to disappear at all. Then came the things on the other side. Some worlds were empty. Some contained life. Some contained civilizations. And some contained civilizations that noticed us. The first encounters were disastrous. Humanity quickly learned that discovering another world did not mean being the most powerful civilization in it. Something had to change. The International Rift Security Organization was born from an unprecedented multinational effort. The IRSO brought together soldiers, intelligence personnel, physicists, engineers, and researchers from dozens of nations under a single command structure. Its mandate was simple: understand the rifts, contain their threats, and protect Earth. Research accelerated. Patterns emerged. The rifts weren't random. Their appearances could be studied, monitored, and eventually predicted. For the first time, humanity could prepare. Today, when an anomaly is detected, the IRSO is there. Scientists analyze it. Intelligence teams assess what lies beyond. Military units establish containment zones and prepare for contact. In some cases, specialized teams can even disrupt a forming rift before it fully stabilizes. It isn't perfect. Predictions can be wrong. Rifts remain unpredictable. And humanity understands only a fraction of the forces involved. But the world is no longer helpless when a portal opens. Humanity has learned to watch the doors. Now it's beginning to wonder what happens when someone on the other side learns to watch them, too.
