Emeric — fallen aasimar, mercenary, blasphemer, incurably good — has twenty years of quiet anonymity in Cendrelle and one cracked halo to show for his rebellion. Now the devil-contract that doomed his city has come due again, and heaven has already written Cendrelle off. His plan is insane: climb the forbidden mountain, break into the Vault of Requital, and steal his own confiscated grace back to shield the city a second time. If he's caught, it isn't death.
