Riga OMON (Latvian. Riga OMON) is a special purpose militia unit formed in the city of Riga, Latvian SSR in 1988. It was founded by Order No. 206 of the USSR Minister of Internal Affairs Alexander Vlasov dated December 2, 1988. Functions: protection of the constitutional order of the USSR, fight against organized crime. On January 2, 1991, fighters of the Riga OMON seized the Press House, the telegraph office, the building of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Latvia, and disarmed the arsenal of the militia school. After the failure of the August 1991 coup, the Riga OMON was relocated to the city of Tyumen. Some of the unit's fighters subsequently participated in wars on the territory of the former USSR: they fought in Transnistria, Abkhazia, Karabakh, Yugoslavia, and Chechnya.
