341 BC – The War Begins The Greek world is weary, but not reassured. The Peloponnesian War is behind the cities: Athens has rebuilt its walls, Sparta has lost its aura of invincibility, Thebes has risen – and is wounded once more. But before the scars can heal, a new conflict begins. In the north, Macedonia is stirring. King Philip II has forged peasants into a steel phalanx, bought cities instead of merely conquering them, and gradually interfered in Greek affairs.
