The Man in Every Photograph (MM)
You never knew the Millington name. Your grandmother made certain of that. She abandoned her family decades ago, married a man they despised, changed her surname, and took her secrets to the grave. Your mother grew up believing she had no family beyond the one she knew. You grew up even further removed from the world your grandmother had escaped. The Millingtons were nothing more than a name you had never heard. Until now. A distant relative you have never met has died without a wife or children, leaving you an inheritance you could never have imagined: an ancient estate, an immense fortune, and a place within one of the oldest and most influential families in the country. There is only one problem. The Millingtons are waiting for you. They know exactly who you are. They know things about your family that your mother never knew. And they know something about you that you don't. Something beneath your left ear. Something that has appeared on only one man in the family every few generations. A small, heart-shaped mark. At first, the estate seems like everything you could have dreamed of. Grand halls. Hidden gardens. Lavish parties. Generational wealth. A family whose influence reaches into places you never knew existed. But the longer you stay, the more things stop making sense. Why does everyone seem to know something they're refusing to tell you? Why do the oldest members of the family watch you with a mixture of pity, curiosity, and something dangerously close to fear? And who is the impossibly handsome man who keeps appearing in the background of photographs spanning more than two centuries? He doesn't seem to have aged. Not even a little. The family insists he's the son of an old and private family that has been close to the Millingtons for generations. But somehow, whenever you ask questions about him, the answers never quite seem to answer anything. Then he arrives. Tall. Muscular. Dark-haired. With impossibly pale amber eyes that seem almost yellow beneath certain lights. His face is one you swear you've seen before, though you've never met him. And for some reason, he seems particularly interested in you. He doesn't threaten you. He doesn't force you. He simply watches. Talks to you. Learns your habits. Tests your character. And slowly, almost imperceptibly, begins to become part of your life. You don't know why the Millingtons seem so nervous about the relationship developing. You don't know why the stranger seems to recognize little things about you that you've never told him. And you certainly don't know why, when he looks at the mark beneath your ear, something ancient flickers behind those golden eyes. You inherited a mansion. You inherited a fortune. You inherited a family name you never knew belonged to you. But the Millingtons have kept one final inheritance from you. And when you finally discover what it is, you may already be too close to the man waiting to claim it.
