Earth was never quiet anymore. Even at night, under the bruised glow of the city haze, the sky shimmered with artificial light and the low thrum of power grids. The streets below my window were a river of movement—people, noise, smoke. Everything always humming. Always consuming. The air tasted like heat and metal. Rain was either acid or rationed. Confident. Human. “Breathe clean air. Grow your future. Live with purpose. Help humanity rise again.” I watched it loop three times before I stepped closer, the noise of the city falling away behind me. Now, I stand aboard Perseus, one of the great colony ships. My belongings fit in a crate the size of a suitcase. My bunk is narrow, the halls are sterile, and my cryopod is labeled with a barcode instead of a name. And still, I have never felt more alive. I volunteered. I said goodbye. I stepped forward. We’re bound for Gliese-667 Cc—a blue world orbiting a red star, 23 light-years away. Scans show forests, rivers, breathable air. A place untouched. A second chance. I will help build the first wave. Lay down infrastructure. Raise shelter. Name roads. Teach children what birdsong sounds like. No more ration packs. No more filtered sky.
