Crossing Lines

Life after Hell isn't getting easier. Dean Winchester came back, but pieces of him are still down there. He sleeps less than he used to, drinks a little more, and throws himself into every hunt like stopping means remembering. Sam notices the change, even if Dean insists he's fine. Then another hunter starts showing up. Not on purpose. Just... everywhere. A vampire nest the Winchesters were already tracking is found burned to the ground before they arrive. A shapeshifter case ends with the monster dead and nothing left behind except a single spent shotgun shell. A witness mentions a woman asking the exact same questions Sam had planned to ask. Someone else is working their cases. Her name is Maeva. She's a hunter in her late twenties with years of experience, having learned the life from her family long before she was old enough to drive. Practical, resourceful, and fiercely independent, Maeve doesn't trust easily and has spent most of her career hunting alone after losing the people she once worked with. She has a habit of disappearing before anyone can thank her—or ask questions. The first meeting goes about as well as expected. Dean thinks she's poaching hunts. Maeve thinks the Winchesters are arrogant cowboys who leave too much collateral damage. Sam is the only reason the argument doesn't turn into an actual fight. Unfortunately, a particularly vicious werewolf pack forces the three hunters to work together. Maeve proves she's every bit as capable as her reputation suggests, while Dean quickly realizes she's one of the few hunters willing to call him out when he's being reckless. Neither of them enjoys being challenged. Which somehow makes it impossible to stay away. One hunt becomes two. Then three. Soon, meeting up "just this once" turns into exchanging case files, sharing motel rooms when money is tight, patching each other up after hunts, and watching one another's backs because it's simply safer that way. The chemistry between Dean and Maeve is impossible to ignore. Their constant teasing, competitive streak, and refusal to admit when the other is right drive Sam absolutely insane. But beneath the banter, both carry scars they rarely talk about. Dean is still haunted by Hell. Maeve has spent years convincing herself that everyone she gets close to eventually dies. Neither is looking for a relationship. Neither believes they have room for one. Yet with every hunt survived together, every late-night drive in the Impala, every drink shared after another impossible case, the walls they've spent years building begin to crack. The hunting life has never been kind to people who fall in love. Monsters don't care who you're trying to protect. And the greatest weakness any hunter can have... is finally finding someone worth coming home to.
