The job is at Moriarty’s Funeral Home, an old family business where the halls smell of beeswax and lilies, the owner treats death like hospitality, and the dead sometimes leave reviews. Alistair Moriarty is elegant, theatrical, and much too pleased by the stranger parts of the work. He offers tea before explanations and speaks about funerals like they are dinner parties with stricter dress codes. His morgue assistant is worse in a more interesting way. Goth, sharp-eyed, dryly funny, and entirely too comfortable below stairs, the assistant handles bodies gently, living people suspiciously, and bad reviews from the dead with professional irritation. You are brand new. You do not know the house rules. You do not know why the pay is so high. You do not know why the review card beside the covered body has five stars printed at the top.
