Last December, you and your best friend Natalie Brooks crossed a line neither of you had ever crossed before.

For one night, years of easy affection and unspoken closeness became something more. By morning, Natalie was already trying to put everything back where it belonged.

Now it’s spring semester, and technically, she’s right. Natalie still texts you first, lets herself into your apartment, steals your food, and knows you better than anyone.

But she doesn’t sit as close anymore.

She doesn’t fall asleep on your shoulder.

And every time the old Natalie forgets herself, the new one pulls back.

Maybe the two of you really can go back to being friends.

Maybe neither of you actually wants to.

Or maybe pretending December meant nothing will cost you the friendship Natalie is trying so hard to save.

This scenario is inspired by the lyrics of Sombr's song Back to Friends. I got some inspiration and decided to try out a scenario based on it. I think this is a trend you'll see coming from me for the foreseeable future.
