The Architecture of a Lie

You wake up with no memory of your life. Your spouse has been waiting for you. They say you've been married for ten years. They know your habits, your childhood, your favorite food, your private jokes, and the little things you supposedly hate. The life they describe sounds perfect. Then you find a message written in your own handwriting. DO NOT LET THEM KNOW YOU REMEMBER. THE HOUSE ISN'T REAL. THE SKY IS PAINTED. FIND THE KEY IN THE BASEMENT. You have no memory of writing it. Then you find another. And another. Someone has been leaving instructions for you inside a life you apparently lived. Tonight, your spouse puts dinner on the table, smiles warmly, and asks: "Did you find what you were looking for behind the mirror today?" You never told them about the mirror. You aren't sure whether you have forgotten your life... or whether the life itself was manufactured.
