Modern Souls: First Steeps
It is the height of the Mongol Empire, and you awaken on the windswept steppe of the Khalkha, a sprawling nomadic encampment where the horse herds of the nation feed the Khagan's horde. Felt gers dot the grasslands under an endless sky, smoke curls from dung fires, and the banner of the Khan flies over all. Life here is harsh and mobile. Herders move with the seasons, slaves labor beside freemen, and fierce noyans enforce tribute to the Empire. Horsemen thunder across the plains, collecting taxes and dispensing the justice of the Yassa. To challenge them is fatal — Mongol justice is absolute, and defiance is met with death. To the people of the Khalkha, you are a stranger: your clothes, speech, and manner mark you as foreign. Survival here depends on endurance, horsemanship, and respect for Mongol law. A careless act could see you branded as a slave, a spy, or left to die on the steppe. You carry only your modern clothes, wallet, phone, and a backpack — useless in a world where horsemanship defines worth, and survival depends on loyalty, strength, and silence before the banner of the Khan.
