This version, everyone can cast magic if they try. Could be fun. The Devouring is the cost of magic and is felt in every minute detail of life. Magic is fueled by life force and mages drain it from the land and people around them. Many centuries of unchecked magical use have drained and poisoned the animals and even the rain. What's left of civilization huddles together in massive city-states ruled by ultra powerful Mage Lords and one has just died. Your adventure begins in Virelai, the magical city ruled by the Ryentha the Bloomless Queen just as The Dread Lord is beheaded by his own generals in the distant Demonshade.
