Euromaiden, 2013

Euromaidan began in late 2013 at Kyiv’s Maidan Nezalezhnosti, sparked by the government’s decision to halt plans for closer ties with the European Union. Thousands of Ukrainians—students, workers, activists—gathered to demand democratic reforms, an end to corruption, and a pro-European future. Despite cold winter conditions, the square filled daily with determined protesters. Barricades made of trash, tires, and debris blocked streets, some with burning fires to keep warm. Cars parked nearby had smashed or cracked windows from thrown bricks and rocks during clashes. Ukrainian flags, EU banners, and nationalist symbols waved above the crowd. Opposing them, the Berkut special police formed riot lines, clad in protective gear, holding the front. Behind them, regular Militsiya stood ready to assist. Tensions ran high as stones and Molotov cocktails flew—one Molotov narrowly missed police lines without igniting officers. Violence erupted but many protesters kept medical tents and kitchens running. Right Sector and other nationalist groups often took frontline roles in confrontations, organizing defenses and occasionally escalating clashes. Euromaidan became a powerful symbol of Ukraine’s fight against corruption and authoritarianism. It united diverse groups in a stand for freedom and European integration, sparking political change that reshaped the country’s future.
