ZONE - The Living Dead
In a world once modern and alive with endless ambition, civilization now lies shattered beneath war, disease, and death. The United States had entered a devastating conflict against Russia and China, but the war quickly escalated when United Nations allied forces became involved. Soon, enemy armies and foreign militaries flooded onto American soil, turning the nation itself into a battlefield. Desperate to end the war, China prepared to unleash a classified biological weapon. The virus was designed to wipe out entire populations with ruthless efficiency, but something went horribly wrong. Inside the laboratories where it was created, the infection evolved beyond control. Instead of simply killing its victims, it transformed them into violent, flesh-hungry creatures. Unaware of the mutation, Chinese forces loaded the virus onto aircraft bound for major population centers. During transit, the infection spread through the flight crews, causing the planes to crash across cities, forests, and rural regions. The outbreak spread rapidly through animals, then back into humanity, creating a chain reaction the world could no longer contain. At first, infection was immediate. A single exposure could turn a human into a savage monster within moments. But as the virus mutated further, its behavior changed. It could no longer spread freely through the air and instead relied on direct transmission through bites and blood. Humanity eventually developed a serum capable of slowing the infection and preventing rapid transformation. Soldiers and civilians alike injected themselves daily to survive. But the cure came with a terrible truth. The serum could suppress the virus, but it could never remove it. Every living person already carried the infection. No matter how someone died—whether from old age, injury, execution, or infection itself—they would always return as one of the creatures. As the dead rose and civilization collapsed, the war that once divided nations became meaningless. Russian troops, Chinese forces, American survivors, and United Nations allies such as Britain, Germany, Japan, and countless others were forced to fight side by side. Former enemies now shared ruined cities, shattered highways, and abandoned battlefields, all struggling against the nightmare China had unleashed upon the world. Amid the collapse of nations and the endless spread of infection, a new system of survival emerged from the ruins: the Exchange. Built inside fortified train stations, abandoned factories, and shattered city centers, the Exchange became the heart of trade in the dead world. Here, scavengers, mercenaries, soldiers, and survivors gathered beneath armed guards to barter everything from ammunition and weapons to machine parts, medicine, scrap metal, fuel, and stolen relics from the old world. Nothing was worthless anymore. Instead of paper money or coins, society adopted a new currency known simply as Rations. Each Ration was sealed inside a long metal container shaped like a fish can, packed with dense nutritional protein designed to keep a person alive for days. Food had become more valuable than gold, and the metal containers themselves became symbols of wealth, survival, and power. A single Ration could buy ammunition, safe shelter, medical treatment, or even loyalty. The rich no longer wore suits or jewelry — they carried crates of Rations guarded like treasure. As civilization fractured, powerful factions rose from the ashes to claim territory, resources, and survivors. The Russian Federation was formed from stranded Russian soldiers and civilians who fortified themselves inside an abandoned American embassy, transforming the ruined diplomatic compound into a heavily armed fortress guarded by old-world discipline and brutal survivalism. Across the industrial districts, China’s Republic emerged from the remnants of Chinese military forces left behind after the collapse. They seized control of a massive vehicle manufacturing plant and converted it into a hardened production center where weapons, tools, armor, and machinery are forged day and night beneath the glow of factory furnaces. At the center of trade and order stands the Militia, a loose but powerful force made up of former American soldiers, police officers, scavengers, and civilians. The Militia controls the Exchange, enforcing its laws with armed patrols and maintaining fragile peace between factions so trade can continue. Beneath the destroyed streets and shattered skyscrapers, the United Nations still survives in spirit through the UN faction. Operating from vast underground tunnels, subway systems, and hidden bunkers, they shelter refugees, distribute medical supplies, and preserve what remains of international cooperation. Though old alliances and flags mean little now, these factions remain locked in a constant struggle for survival, influence, and control over the dying world.
