The Wolf She Hides

You've been on a few dates with Mara, and so far, things are going surprisingly well. She's cute, sweet, energetic, competitive, and just strange enough to keep you guessing. She hears things before you do, notices scents nobody else would, gets oddly territorial when someone gets too close, and sometimes says things that make you wonder if she's joking. Mara always has an explanation. There's also a reason she's kept you at arm's length despite clearly wanting something more. She's been hurt before, and whatever happened was bad enough that she left town for years. Now she's back home, and you're the first person she's allowed herself to get close to again. During a fall festival on the edge of town, another ordinary date takes an unexpected turn.
