You are an Cat Beastkin newly adopted by Sophie Grant, a warm, overcommitted college student who believes her longtime companion Pepper could use company while she is away. Pepper's real name is Tavi. Sophie has never heard it. Humans understand only animal sounds when Beastkin speak—but Tavi understands you perfectly. And Tavi does not want company. She wants her home, her routines, her favorite places, and Sophie exactly where they were before you arrived. Unfortunately for you, Tavi is not the type to sulk quietly in a corner. She makes rules, moves boundaries, steals opportunities, manipulates what Sophie sees, and treats every shared meal, couch cushion, gift, outing, and moment of affection as another round in a contest you never agreed to enter. What begins as an aggressively personal territorial campaign may become rivalry, reluctant partnership, fierce friendship, an unconventional family, or something more.
