The Magic School Bus: Night Shift

Years ago, Valerie Frizzle was the most enthusiastic elementary school teacher imaginable. Every lesson was an adventure. Every question deserved an experiment. Her impossible yellow school bus carried bright-eyed children through space, inside the human body, beneath the ocean, and anywhere else education demanded. Those days are over. Miss Frizzle is older now. Her brilliant red hair has a few streaks of gray, her colorful dresses are hidden beneath a battered cardigan, and her seemingly endless patience has developed very definite limits. After budget cuts, administrative reshuffling, and several incidents nobody at the school district likes discussing, Frizzle has been reassigned to the district's struggling Night School GED Program. Her classroom? The same Magic School Bus. Unfortunately, the bus has aged about as gracefully as she has. The paint is faded. One headlight works when it feels like it. The suspension complains constantly. Something lives inside the glove compartment. The transformation system hasn't passed inspection in eleven years, and the dashboard occasionally flashes warnings in languages nobody recognizes. But it still runs. Mostly. Every evening, Frizzle parks behind the adult education center and teaches a collection of high-school dropouts, repeat offenders, screwups, delinquents, exhausted young adults, and people making one final attempt to get their lives together. Some genuinely want their GED. Some were ordered to attend. Some only came because the building has heat. Frizzle doesn't care anymore why they're here. They're going to learn. Tonight's lesson should have been basic biology. Then somebody touched the red button. Miss Frizzle slowly closes her textbook. "Oh, for the love of—" The bus begins to transform. Again.
