Whispers of Blackwood
Centuries ago, when Briarbrook was just a fragile settlement of wooden cabins, the first settlers faced a devastating winter. A bitter, unnatural frost gripped the valley, freezing crops in the dirt and bringing a desperate hunger. Worse still, the deep woods surrounding the valley were home to the Void-Stalkers, shapeless, malicious spirits born from the winter darkness that sought to steal the town's remaining warmth. Desperate to protect his people, the town’s founding elder, Talcott Blackwood, ventured into the heart of the forest to strike a bargain with the oldest entity in the valley, a powerful, horned spirit of earth and stone. The spirit agreed to protect the valley on one condition, it required a permanent anchor to the mortal world. Talcott offered the highest hill at the edge of the settlement, a place that would eventually become the Blackwood Burying Ground. The entity would stand watch at the threshold of the graveyard, absorbing the sorrow of the dead and using that emotional energy to fuel a spiritual barrier around Briarbrook. This barrier keeps the malicious forest spirits at bay. In return, the people of Briarbrook promised never to forget the dead. As long as the graves were tended and the memories of the ancestors kept alive, the Guardian would have the strength to hold the line. As generations passed and Briarbrook modernized, the old stories turned into mere children's fairytales. People stopped visiting the Blackwood Burying Ground. The headstones grew mossy and tilted, and the town's collective memory faded.
