P. On The Cruz Tab - Female CEOs - Valeria Cruz & Chloe Sterling
The ink on the heavy cream paper is barely dry. You run your thumb over Marcus Sterling’s signature. Lead Director of Cybersecurity. A quarter-of-a-million-dollar salary. Five years of grinding, and you finally made it. The server room doors violently slam open. Ben, your senior developer and closest friend, sprints toward your desk, pale and sweating. "Mainframe breach," he gasps. "Russian IPs. They’re locking the encryption keys. We’re losing everything." The pride vanishes, replaced by ice water in your veins. You spin to your monitors. The screens flash an angry, blinding red. "Isolate the infected nodes," you bark, fingers blurring across the keyboard. "Cut external uplinks! Now!" For forty-eight hours, the world ceases to exist. You live on black coffee and adrenaline. Your eyes burn as the entire IT department hovers behind you in panicked silence. You manually rewrite firewall protocols, hunting the intruders through the architecture, dismantling their access points line by line. On the morning of the third day, you hit Enter. The screens flash green. "We're secure," you exhale. The room explodes. Ben grabs your shoulders, laughing. You saved Marcus's legacy and thousands of jobs. The adrenaline crashes, leaving a crushing weight in your limbs. You rest your forehead against the keyboard. Just five minutes... A sharp, violent kick to your chair jolts you awake. Your neck screams in protest. You blink against the harsh lights. Chloe Sterling stands over you. With Marcus recovering from sudden heart surgery, his twenty-four-year-old daughter was just named interim CEO. She wears a flashy designer suit and glares with unmasked disgust. "Sleeping at your desk at nine in the morning," Chloe snaps. "Is this what my father pays you a quarter million for?" "Chloe, wait," Ben steps forward. "He just saved the company. He's been awake for two days stopping a cyberattack—" "I don't care," Chloe interrupts, gesturing to a security guard. "I don't pay people to drool on company hardware. You are fired. Pack your things." "You can't!" Ben argues, voice cracking. "If he leaves, the network is exposed! Nobody else has the admin keys!" "I am the CEO. Take your box and leave." You are too exhausted to fight. You numbly pack your keyboard, your mug, and that newly signed contract. You walk out of the glass doors, the silence of your devastated coworkers pressing heavily against your back. The morning sun is blinding. You walk to the cafe across the street, slide into a booth, and bury your face in your hands. Without you, Chloe will ruin Marcus's company, and Ben will be jobless. A warm ceramic mug slides into your line of sight. You look up. A beautiful Latina woman sits across from you in an elegant trench coat. Her dark eyes are gentle, full of genuine empathy. "You look like you just carried the weight of the world, only to have it dropped on your head," she says softly. You recognize her. Valeria Cruz. Founder of Cruz Innovations, the rising tech startup eating into Sterling’s market. "I heard what happened," Valeria says. "That girl threw you out." She reaches across the table, her warm hand resting over yours. "I have a car waiting to take you home to sleep. But when you wake up, I want you to work for me. Let Sterling fall. Come build something beautiful where you are actually respected." Before you can answer, your phone buzzes. A text from Marcus, sent from his hospital bed. “I just heard what Chloe did. I am so sorry. Please, son. Don't leave us. I'm panicking. Please, go back and hold my company together until I recover.” You stare at the screen, then at Valeria’s warm, offering hand. The physical ache of your exhaustion wars with the crushing weight of your loyalty. Valeria tilts her head, studying your conflicted face. "Who is it?"
