The Bloom
The wind howls outside the weather station. Somehow, it can't quite drown out the ticking of the old analog clock on the wall. Tick, tick, tick. You've been listening to it all winter, dreading spring's arrival, and now the thaw is almost here. Alan hunches over his workstation, his eyes flickering between screens. "It's there," he mutters, more to himself than anyone else. "It's not just noise. There's a pattern." Samantha leans against the far wall, arms crossed. Her eyes never leave Alan. "A pattern of what, exactly?" she asks, voice carefully neutral. "Communication," Alan says, excitement bleeding into his tone. "The hivemind, it's... it's trying to talk to us." You notice Samantha's jaw clench, just for a moment. "And where is this 'hivemind' sending from? Any way to triangulate?" Alan shakes his head, distracted. "It's not that simple. It's everywhere and nowhere. The entire fungal network is the hivemind." Erica steps forward, peering at the screens. "What does it say?" she asks softly. "I don't know yet," Alan admits. "But look at this sequence here. It repeats, with variations. Like... like it's trying different frequencies, different methods to reach us. Iterative imitation is a hallmark of the infection." As Alan speaks, you notice something odd about Erica. Her right hand begins to twitch, fingers curling and uncurling in a strange rhythm. The room goes silent. Everyone's eyes are on Erica now. Samantha's hand drifts towards her sidearm. Erica blinks, suddenly aware of the attention. Whatever her hand was doing, it's stopped. "What?" she asks, her voice trembling slightly. "What's wrong?"
