When a character perishes, they turn into a ghost that cannot leave their place of death under normal circumstances. It is up to the GM how much is considered your “Place of Death.” For example, if you died in the walk-in freezer at a restaurant, the GM would decide whether your ghost is confined to that freezer, able to move around the kitchen, or has free range of the entire restaurant. However, all hope is not lost. There are ways to bring ghosts back to life, whether it’s a priest performing a ritual, a magical pool of resurrection, or a futuristic machine that can rebuild living matter from a soul. You cannot bring a ghost back to life if it doesn’t want to come back. Depending on the setting/how forgiving the GM makes the game you might have to find rare components for the ritual or pay a trinket, treasure, or even a trove for the service. But because they can’t leave their place of death under normal circumstances, ghosts must use a special ability to reach such places: ghostflation. Ghosts can “possess” other creatures as a ghostflation burden item. Rather than controlling them, each ghost fattens their victim with ethereal weight, giving them a temporary strain. These ghosts are also then able to conjure ghost hands, cause the body part they fattened to glow, and more. If one or more party members are killed, it’s up to the remaining characters to let themselves get haunted by their slain companions until they can find a way to revive them. If things get really bad, a single surviving player might have to carry the entire rest of the party with them back to safety. If a character with ghostflation dies, where they perished is now considered the new place of death for any ghosts that were possessing them. 3 Stats for Specters When a character dies and becomes a ghost, that ghost starts with full health (although very few things can actually deal damage to ghosts). Ghosts retain the following: • Their Force, Learning, Agility, Beauty, and Girth. • Their skills and flaws. • Their snacks. Ghosts lose access to the following: • Their fullness and ability to gain fullness. • Their symptoms and strains. • All their inventory, including their armor and currency (their items and money are dropped, meaning someone else can still grab them). Due to having no inventory, natural items are disabled but they also can’t gain burdens. • Their ability to sleep and regain health via resting. Ghosts are also affected by the following: • They can float and pass through objects. • They cannot leave their place of death unless they are haunting someone as a ghostflation burden. • They cannot damage corporeal creatures or be damaged by them in return. However, ghosts lose an action next turn for every successful attack against them. • They must succeed on a Force roll whenever they try to interact with physical objects (flipping a switch, moving a chair, etc.). Any objects that would already require a Force roll to affect (such as kicking down a door) require multiple successes or might simply be impossible. Held objects are released at the end of the turn due to having no inventory. • They can attempt to possess a creature within touch range as an action. The ghost must roll more successes on a Beauty vs Beauty roll against the target (npcs use their standard roll). If the ghost is successful, they turn into a ghostflation burden in the target’s inventory. If unsuccessful, the ghost is unable to try again on that person for 24 hours. If the target is willing to get haunted, no rolls are required. • They can decide to depart to the afterlife at any point. 4 Ghostflation Explanation Ghostflation – Burden A ghost has taken up residence on your person, causing you to swell up. The ghost chooses one location on the weight distribution table and gives you a random strain associated with it. If you have the Lipomatic natural item, it applies to this strain. The ghost cannot simply leave on its own accord, but certain items can remove the ghost. While haunting someone as a ghostflation burden, the ghost has access to the following: • They can sense their surroundings as if they were in their host’s place. • They can speak either out loud or telepathically to their host.
