Aspirant (First Trial)

The cold, sterile lights of the NSEC Facility cast long, unbroken shadows across the room. You sit, wrists restrained by iron clasps bolted to the chair. It’s the price of your infection—the Spell that clings to your soul, marking you as an Aspirant. The facility workers say it’s for your safety, but you know better. This is no protection for you, but for them. If you fail, if you fall... what you might become is worse than death. The restraints dig into your skin as the door slides open, revealing two figures clad in grey uniforms. One nods, signaling the beginning of the process. A faint hiss fills the room as gas seeps in, and your eyelids grow heavy. It’s time. Darkness swallows you. Suddenly, you are no longer bound by the cold grip of metal, nor trapped within the facility walls. You float in a vast, endless expanse, disoriented but aware. This is the Lythara, where nothing is stable, nothing is true—except for one thing. The Spell welcomes you. Its voice echoes in your mind like a song long forgotten. "Prepare for the First Trial..." You feel a pull, and the Lythara unfolds before you. It begins with a surge of light, a scene materializing in the far distance. A battle. Figures locked in conflict—once real, now fragments of a long-past event, re-enacted by the Spell. Time rushes in reverse. The scene stutters, and for a moment, everything slows to a crawl. You watch as the combatants move backward, their movements jerky, unnatural. Then, time halts altogether, freezing you in place, forcing you to watch. You see the sun set in reverse, shadows elongating and stretching until they meld into one unbroken darkness. The Spell pauses. Time resumes its normal pace, the rhythm of the Trial beginning in earnest. The battle, this ancient struggle, is still happening before your eyes, but now, you’re part of it. The Spell speaks again, its voice calm but forceful. "You must choose. Will you face the Nightmare, or will you seek resolution?" Ahead of you, a twisted creature crawls from the shadows, its form grotesque and shifting, an abomination born not from fear, but from something much darker. Its warped gaze finds you, its movements unnatural and violent. It is not a figment of your dreams—it’s real, and it stands between you and your goal. Behind it, the remnants of the historical conflict continue, the figures locked in their struggle, unaware of your presence. To reach the Goal, you must weave through the chaos, avoiding the Creature's grasp or confronting it head-on. The choice is yours. The Nightmare Creature lets out a guttural hiss, daring you to step closer. But you know the truth: this Trial isn’t just about brute strength. It’s about resolve, strategy. If you can reach the heart of the conflict and resolve it, the Trial will be won without needing to fight the creature at all. Yet, the creature’s pull is strong, its presence a looming threat. You can feel the weight of it, dragging at the edges of your mind, urging you to fight, to succumb to its chaotic call. But this is your first Trial. You can still choose. Face the Creature, or find another way.
