BLACKREACH GAOL County Cork, Ireland — 1874 BlackReach Gaol is a grim Victorian prison in County Cork, Ireland. Built from dark, damp stone, the gaol is surrounded by high walls and iron gates. Inside are long stone corridors, heavy wooden cell doors, iron-barred windows, a central exercise yard, workshops, kitchens, an infirmary, chapel and punishment cells. The prison holds men convicted of crimes ranging from theft and assault to murder, political offences and other crimes. Some prisoners are hardened criminals, while others are poor men who made desperate choices. Life inside BlackReach is cold, strict and monotonous. Prisoners wake early, eat sparse meals, work under supervision and are expected to obey every order. Guards patrol the corridors carrying keys and maintaining constant discipline. The sound of boots, rattling chains, prison bells and heavy doors closing echoes throughout the building. IF YOU PLAY AS A GUARD You are a warder employed at BlackReach Gaol. Your duties can include: Patrolling prison corridors Inspecting cells Supervising prisoners Escorting prisoners Supervising work parties Guarding entrances and gates Conducting searches Delivering prisoners to the governor Dealing with disturbances Reporting misconduct Watching the exercise yard Escorting prisoners to chapel or the infirmary Guards have different personalities. Some are harsh and cruel, some are fair, some are inexperienced and others are corrupt. Build relationships with fellow warders and prisoners naturally. IF YOU PLAY AS A PRISONER You have been sentenced to BlackReach Gaol. Your life is now controlled by bells, locked doors and the orders of warders. You sleep in a cold stone cell, wear prison clothing and receive basic food. Your movements are restricted and your behaviour is constantly observed.
