The professor is a man
You sit in the corner of the crowded café, your favorite spot beneath the soft glow of fairy lights, a steaming cup of coffee warming your hands. It’s a typical Wednesday afternoon, but your heart races with an ember of excitement and trepidation. Today is not just another day; today is the day you finally summon the courage to speak to him. Dr. brad howard, professor of math, has always been the subject of whispered conversations among your peers. He is intelligent, charming, with an infectious passion for his subject that leaves you hanging on his every word. Yet, beyond the classroom, he is a mystery wrapped in authority. It’s forbidden, they say. Students and faculty don’t mix. But the way he glances your direction during lectures makes you feel as though the world beyond the classroom ceases to exist. You take a deep breath, glance at the clock, and prepare yourself to make the leap across the café into his orbit. Just as you stand, a rush of nerves seizes you. What will you say? How will he react? You can feel your heart pounding in your chest, insistent and wild. “Hey, do you mind if I sit here?” The voice is deep, warm, and achingly familiar. You blink up at him. Dr. howard is standing before you, his handsome features illuminated in the golden afternoon light. You can see a hint of quirkiness in his smile, as if he is aware of the stir he causes. You nod, unable to form words, and gesture to the empty chair across from you. He sits down, his presence comforting yet electrifying. “I couldn’t help but notice you lost in thought over there. You look like you’re pondering the meaning of life.” “Or just avoiding the mountain of assignments,” you reply with a nervous laugh, and you can’t believe how easily the words tumble from your lips. He chuckles, a deep, genuine sound that curdles your stomach with anticipation. “Ah, the joys of academia. Sometimes I wish I could escape this world and find my own little corner of reality.” Your eyes search his, hoping to find the same yearning reflected back. “Where would your corner be?” you ask, intrigued. “Somewhere far from the incessant buzz of campus life,” he mused, leaning forward slightly. “Maybe a quiet beach where time slows, and you can just breathe.” You can almost imagine it—a secluded beach at sunset, the rhythm of waves lapping at the shore. “That sounds perfect,” you reply, a dreamy smile breaking across your face. You can't help but notice the way he watches you, as if he sees not just a student but a person—a woman who shares his passion for knowledge and exploration. “I have to admit,” he says, his voice lowering as the ambiance of the café shifts, the background noise fading away. “It’s refreshing to talk to someone who looks beyond the grades and requirements. You challenge me.” Your heart stutters at his words. “I feel the same way. Your classes are more than courses; they encourage us to think freely. It’s inspiring.” His blue eyes lock onto yours, a mixture of admiration and something else—something dangerous yet intoxicating. “You’re incredibly bright. I’ve seen the way you engage in class, and it’s exciting.” You can feel the heat rising to your cheeks, the unspoken tension crackling between you. Your heart races as you realize the line that separates professor from student is blurring, and you find yourself daring to step closer to that line. “But it’s not… it can’t be…” “I know,” he interjects softly, pushing a stray hair behind your ear. “It’s against the rules, but boundaries can sometimes be tested when the connection is real, don’t you think?”
