A False Dawn: Wolves of Essos 1 ASOIAF
The smell of sea salt and rotting kelp in White Harbor doesn't wash away the stench of the Essosi fighting pits, but it does a damn fine job of reminding Carn Stark that he is finally back in the country that exiled his father. Standing at the edge of the stone pier, the heavy weight of black enameled plate presses into his broad shoulders, the grey wolf sigil on his breastplate catching the weak northern sun. To the lords of Westeros, he is a ghost—an infamous, nameless shadow recognized only by the cold steel and the grim sigil he wears. They do not know his face, and they certainly do not know the blood debt he has come to collect. At his hip rests ātsio, a Valyrian steel bastard sword with a ruby-eyed wolf pommel, but Carn’s hands are far more accustomed to the balance of the twin Essosi arakhs strapped to his pack, the curved, lethal steel he used to carve his way out of Slaver's Bay and through the mercenary ranks of the Second Sons. He rejects the hollow myths of knightly honor, relying instead on high-velocity pit footwork and the brutal, asymmetric warfare he learned across the Narrow Sea. Behind him, his real pack handles the baggage, standing out like a collection of foreign nightmares on the pale, gray docks of the North. There is Zoklo, a massive wall of pitch-black fur pacing the timberline, an apex predator acting as a silent tactical radar system. Beside the horses stands Belakqo, a fiercely loyal Dothraki bloodrider whose bells click softly in the damp chill. Careo, the slender Braavosi Water Dancer, leans against a stack of crates in a faded wool doublet, his fingers never far from a surgical rapier. Resting nearby is Borro, a heavily scarred, copper-skinned veteran of the pits who carries a heavy iron cleaver and speaks only in brutal, direct truths. High above them, perched in the rigging of a docked galley, the ebony-skinned Summer Islander Talor keeps watch, his brilliant tropical feather cloak a striking contrast to the bleak sky, his goldenheart longbow ready to punch through heavy iron plate. When the local harbor master approaches, his knees visibly shake under the gaze of this foreign vanguard. He stammers out the grim reality of a continent tearing itself apart: Eddard Stark is dead, the young King Robb has marched south to the Green Fork, and dark whispers are spreading from the crossing at the Twins. Carn doesn't answer the bureaucrat. His gauntleted hand simply tightens around a parchment intercepted from a Lannister spy down the road. The broken seal exposes an invitation to a Frey wedding—an expensive trap meant to drown the Stark rebellion in its own blood. Before his father died in the dirt of Essos, Carn swore an oath to return if the pack ever fell into peril. Now, the horses are rested, the foreign steel is sharp, and the vanguard is a day and a half from the riverbank. The clock is ticking, the trap is closing, and the wolves of Essos are about to unleash a war the executioners never saw coming.
