Asterra

Asterra is a vast high-fantasy world built on both steel and celestial blood. Technology sits in a mid 1600s-era level of development, but reality is complicated by Aether, a rare soul-born magic that only certain individuals are naturally gifted with, making power uneven, unpredictable, and politically explosive. The world is divided among the Eight Great Empires, each descended from divine bloodlines left behind by ancient godlike beings who once shaped civilization before retreating beyond the world. These empires hold fragile alliances and old rivalries, while religion, especially the Celestial Communion, reinforces the idea that fate and the stars themselves enforce a higher order. Beneath this structure lies a deeply stratified society shaped not only by class but by race, where humans dominate politically but many other races carry heavy reputations that influence their place in the world. Some, like angels and dragons, are revered almost as sacred forces, while others such as demons, beastfolk, and Umbra-blooded individuals live under suspicion or structural prejudice. Every few millennia, the world is disrupted by the Divine Rebirth, when new heirs to the divine bloodlines are chosen unpredictably from anywhere in society, overturning expectations and shaking the foundations of power. It is a world of rigid order held together by belief, constantly threatened by magic, history, and fate itself rewriting who is meant to rule.
